49 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

*Marcus Garvey - Jamaican National Hero*
Born St Ann (JA) August 1887 - Died London (UK) June 1940
Advocate for the embracing of the African Aesthetic, Garvey refused to allow advertisments for skin lightening or hair straightening products in his publications....
"Take down the pictures of white women from your walls elevate your own women to that place of honor they are for the most part the burden bearers of the race. Mothers give your children dolls that look like them to play with and cuddle, they will learn as they grow older to love and care for their own children and not neglect them Men and Women God made us as his perfect creation he made no mistake when he made us black with kinky hair. It was divine purpose for us to live in our natural habitat the tropical zones of earth. Forget the white mans banter that he made us in the night and forgot to paint us white.... We have outgrown slavery, but our minds are still enslaved to the thinking of the Master race. Now take theses kinks out of your mind instead of out of your hair." (Marcus Garvey)

Jamaica's most famous Rasta...
*Robert Nester Marley*
Born St Ann (JA) February, 1945 - Died Florida (U.S) May, 1981
World-renowned reggae artist who's lyrics remain revolutionary....
Dreadlocks in Jamaica
The dreadlocks hairstyle first appeared in Jamaica during post emancipation. It was a means of defiance for ex-slaves to rebel against Euro-centrism that was forced on them. The hairstyle was originally referred to as a "dreadful" hairstyle by the Euro centric Jamaican society. It later evolved to the term now used: Dreadlocks. Jamaicans also use the term Natty Dreadlock. (source)
"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds." (Bob Marley, Redemption Song)
